Behold! On this huge desolate lot, there once was a house. Now that house is gone and a large amount of old and rusted furniture remains. And in the picture below MEVO volunteers are removing not the first, but the second refrigerator out of the lot. There’s even a washing machine in the whole mess.

Now consider this. Think of all the pollutant’s inside these appliances, made in the 1950s, which are going into our water, and ruining the atmosphere slowly, but steadily. And this can go on for a while without anyone picking up a single piece of litter. So join MEVO this summer, and remove pollutants like these to make our environment a better place to be.

Great Opportunities for MEVO this Season!

With summer fast approaching, MEVO is getting warmed up for what will be an awesome volunteer season. Be a part of it this summer, and make your mark by helping preserve the environment of Mahwah and other communities in Bergen County. You’ll be doing trash clean ups, tree/flower planting, invasive plant removal, trail construction, even some scenic hikes at the Ramapo Reservation. And make sure to stay tuned, for more news about MEVO’s tire removal competition, set to take place this summer on Stag Hill. So get ready for what will be an awesome MEVO season!

Trail Work is Coming…

Volunteers of all kinds! Trail work is coming to Emerson, New Jersey. On Saturday, May 25th, MEVO will be heading to Emerson to ramp work on the trail project it has started there. For while a trail exists in Emerson, it is in a sorry state.

MEVO will improve the trail by making a more noticeable and clear path to it, as well as make it easier to walk on (said to be one of the most important things for a trail). In addition, water bars to stop erosion and stepping stones to prevent minor flooding will be placed.

MEVO has already worked on this trail before in March, and we are eager to finish the job. So join us, and volunteer to make a New Jersey a little bit more green.

May 25: Trail Construction

In March, MEVO volunteers cleared out the Emerson trail of garbage. Now it’s time to begin carving out this trail. We will be moving and cutting out logs and placing water barks to stop erosion. The trail is already evident, but it needs some work to be easier to walk on and become more appealing to the eye. For instance, there is a rusty fence that may need to be cut. This work will definitely payoff when Emerson has a redefined nature trail for the townspeople to walk through. We will be meeting at the Ramapo Reservation at 10:00 AM and will probably be working until 2:30 PM. We definitely advise you to bring water and some clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty. May 18: Hike of the Month

May might just be the perfect time of the year to enjoy the wilderness Ramapo reservation has to offer. It’s warm, but not yet as hot as the intense summer months. Wildlife and plants are both flourishing this time of year. Join us for a nature-filled hike this day! We will meet at the Ramapo Reservation at 11:00 AM and will be back down about 2:00 PM. May 11: Invasive Plants Removal

Garlic mustard is cropping up under the shrub border along the Garden’s main Avenue of the Botanical Gardens. Our MEVO volunteers will be working to remove the invasive plants. Not only will this project help control an invasive weed, it will also make the main drag much more attractive for the tons of visitors this time of year. Come out for a couple hours on a Saturday afternoon to enjoy making the botanical garden an even more beautiful place! We will meet at the Ramapo Reservation at 2:00 PM and then commute to the New Jersey Botanical Garden in Ringwood, NJ. Bring water to stay hydrated and wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. The Awesomeness of Farm to Live

Observe: several farmers, sweaty, standing on top of one awesome community garden built, and a job well down. This is just one garden down for MEVO’s Farm to Live program, with many more to go. Because that’s what Farm to Live does— it BUILDS gardens, anywhere it can. The food from these gardens is given to local hunger organizations and pollution from the wasteful grass lawns that these gardens are built on is stopped in its tracks. In short, Farm to Live is building a local sustainable food movement throughout Northern New Jersey. And we need volunteers.

The Sweet Sound of Growin’ Season

Y’all hear that, boys? Sounds like the sound of growing season just around the corner. We here at MEVO have started our seedlings last month: 544 to be exact, and with many more seedlings to be expected along the way. Some of what we’re growing is: eggplants, ground cherries, peppers, collards, broccoli, and cauliflower. Many, many more seedlings are due to arrive soon. We hope we are as excited as we are.

So come volunteer for MEVO this summer and have the chance to work with us!

A Great Opportunity to do Good for MEVO

Well…this is an awkward situation. But let’s get the facts straight.

Yes, this is a toilet bowl. Yes, it is filthy and MEVO found it dumped in the middle of a forest. And yes, unfortunately illegal dumping such as this has happened all over Northern New Jersey from the 1950s to the early 1990s.

However, MEVO arrived to remove this toilet, and will work to remove other types of pollution every chance it can. So join the MEVO movement! We have a summer internship program, available (see the link: http://www.idealist.org/view/internship/dMm2ZkFc8pFP/ ). Apply and spend the summer with MEVO. You’ll have the opportunity to clean-up the environment, experience project management with a non-profit, and learn what the heart (and sweat) of environmental sustainability is all about.

Seed Saver’s Exchange and MEVO? A Beautiful Partnership

Hey guys, you know what’s awesome? Seed Saver’s Exchange is!

Seed Saver’s Exchange (or SSE) preserves all types of seeds for future generations to grow. They have a facebook page explaining what they do (https://www.facebook.com/seedsaversexchange?fref=ts) and they have helped give MEVO 50 packets of seeds for….free.

And 50 packets of seeds adds up to 3,850 seeds total for MEVO. That is very generous, and MEVO will be using these seedlings to grow some organic and clean-veggies all over what used to be vacant lots and unused space. So let’s hear it for the Seed Saver’s Exchange for their awesome donation, and let’s make that donation of seed’s grow even more!
